Odds and Ends:
Marking period 2 ends on January 26th. I have printed out copies of missing assignments from PowerSchool for children that owe work. Please encourage them to get work in at least a week before marking period closes so I have time to grade it. Thank you.
Thank you to everyone for thinking of me at Christmas time. Your gifts were incredibly thoughtful, and I can't wait to use them =) I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families.
Language Arts Confessions:
Vocabulary: We will be beginning Vocabulary again next week with our first full week of 2018.
Reading: Children received their second novel today. We will be reading The Sign of the Beaver. This is a historical fiction book that aligns with our Social Studies curriculum. We will be utilizing signposts as well as using skills such as inferencing.
Our second book report has been assigned. Please make sure your child is reading their book and logging signposts every night. They will be writing up 4 signposts for this report. Book reports are due on January 19th.
We will continue to learn different techniques that will help with nonfiction reading. Students have been doing an amazing job with the skills they have been taught. Please encourage them to use them not only in Language Arts but in Social Studies and Science classes as well.
Reading/Writing: Journal responses have been added to weekly writing assignments. Children are given a quote and asked to respond in at least a paragraph about what that quote means to me. Please feel free to peruse their google accounts for their writing. A new essay will be learned and assigned in the 3rd marking period.
Grammar: We are finishing up pronouns this week with a test on Friday. Next up will be adjectives.
Social Studies Confessions:
We have begun looking at the Native Americans of the Northern Hemisphere. Students have begun presenting their projects. I am simply amazed at their creativity and hard work.
With the new skills on how to respond while reading nonfiction students have been learning in Language Arts, ownership of learning and recording information in Social Studies will move gradually to them. Students will now read passages independently and respond with two-column notes, post-its for annotation, reading visual images and constructing notes. We will be meeting as a class to discuss the text and important information that the students have found. Their collaborative note taking efforts will then be logged into Google Classroom.
