Odds and Ends:
Marking period 2 ended. Report cards will go home today, Tuesday, February 6th. Thank you.
Language Arts Confessions:
Vocabulary Unit Practice sheets are assigned each week there is a new unit. They are due on Friday. Quizzes are on Fridays, as well.
We are moving away from dependent learning to independent learning. Students are reading their novel on their own and logging signposts. We then discuss as a class or in partners the signposts they have found and what their significance is.
Every night, students have a reading assignment. It is a short page of different kinds of genres. Students are asked to read through once, and then a second time as they find answers to questions. Finding the answer isn't enough. Students are asked to provide evidence in their answer. Some students are doing extremely well with this. Others are simply putting "lines 5-6" or I already knew the answer. Please encourage your child to answer the question with evidence based answers. I am encouraging it as well.
Students are learning various signal words to uncover a text's structure therefore enabling them to understand what the author wants them to know: ie: cause and effect, compare and contrast, main idea and supporting information. They are also understanding that just because it is nonfiction, doesn't mean it is true. There are three sides to a story and they are learning to question the point of view and bias of nonfiction.
This marking period we are working on argumentative writing. Students will complete various lessons culminating in an argument essay.
Our third book report has been assigned. Please make sure your child is reading their book and logging signposts every night. They will be writing up 5 different signposts for this report. Book reports are due on March 28th.
We are finishing up adjectives with a test sometime next week. Next up will be adverbs..
Social Studies Confessions:
We have begun looking at the Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands. Again, we are moving from dependent learning to independent learning. Students are reading the text and extrapolating important information into their own notes. We then discuss as a class and in partnerships to make sure we have included everything. Students are enjoying the process.
