Odds and Ends:
On Friday, all students missing work were given a highlighted printout from powerschool for all missing Social Studies and LA assignments. Please encourage your child to get assignments in and make up quizzes before the marking period ends in 2 weeks.
Language Arts Confessions:
Children are halfway finished with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. They are spotting the signposts which is showing them the places for close reading to happen. I am amazed at the depth of their thoughts. We had one student bring up how the author is using the Again and Again signpost (they see something occur again and again in the text and then ask the question "Why does the author keep bring this up?) "Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve" because he wants us to think of the Bible. This is called an allusion - when the author alludes or refers to another text without stating it outright. Amazing! My jaw dropped in amazement and admiration! We should complete this book by the middle of November. Next up will be a nonfiction focus.
Book reports began this month. Most of the students have shown me a book for approval. Please make sure your child is reading their book and logging signposts every night. There is a document in Google Classroom with the template for the write up for this book report.
In Grammar we will be completing nouns this week. The Unit Assessment will be the last week of the marking period. The study guide is in the Grammar workbook. Students can use their notes as well to practice. We will begin Pronouns the first week of the 2nd marking period.
Narrative essays were due Friday. Students worked hard on these and were given an editing and revising checklist that will also serve as the rubric for grading. They all learned how to turn a document in through google classroom as well.
Social Studies Confessions:
We have completed chapter 2 in our book and that focussed on the geography of the United States. Next we will be looking at Early Civilizations in the Americas. Students are also practicing their states and capitols and will continue to practice geography skills each day.
All notes are posted in Google Classroom.
