Language Arts Confessions:
Vocabulary: You may have noticed that our quiz format has changed. Fifth grade is a transition year. Students will be moving to the application process which is a higher order thinking skill. They will be applying the spelling strategies learned in the lower grades in their writing, quizzes, tests and classroom work and projects. Vocabulary skills such as definitions, synonyms, antonyms, word choice in writing will be a focus for us moving forward.
Reading: Children completed our novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We all enjoyed some Turkish Delight since it is such a treat in the book, and the children were curious as to what it was.
Our second book report has been assigned. Most of the students have shown me a book for approval. Please make sure your child is reading their book and logging signposts every night. They will be writing up 4 signposts for this report.
We will be beginning our unit on Nonfiction Monday. I will be teaching them skills of annotation, text coding, reading with a question in mind, how to read a picture/illustration, text features, etc.
Reading/Writing: Signpost responses to the novel are due tonight. These six signposts responses will count as their assessment of the novel. It shows me they understand the character's motivations, theme of the novel, internal conflict, who the protagonist is, prediction skills, allusion to other books, how to write a response to a novel, and much more.
We watched the movie The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and will be constructing a Comparison and Contrast Essay.
Grammar: We are working on pronouns. Students should be studying what a pronoun is every night. There are many free tools on the internet such as interactive games, quizzes, and much more. Encourage them to practice.
Social Studies Confessions:
We are completing chapter 3 this week in our book, and that focussed on the Mayans, Aztecs, Mound People and the Anasazi. Quiz will be Friday and the test will be next week. All study guides are in google classroom. Next we will be looking at the Native Americans of North America.
